Wisdom Tooth Extraction

women at dental visit smilingWhile having wisdom teeth removed can bring about anxiety, at First Dental Studio, we’re proud to offer patients a relaxing experience when the time comes for removal.

Did you know that not all wisdom teeth, which are referred to as the third molars, are difficult to remove? In fact, the top ones are frequently removed quickly and painlessly. We also have various sedation options so that you’ll be entirely comfortable during your time with us.

Who Can Benefit?

Wisdom tooth removal occurs most commonly in patients aged 18-25. When wisdom teeth come in, they can cause crowding problems that may result in pain, bite issues and misalignment due to their size. This is why they need to be removed in most cases.

What to Expect

Before your surgery, our team will provide you with a detailed information sheet outlining the procedure and any necessary preparations, including antibiotics and pain medication scripts.

We’ll begin by discussing exactly what will happen so there aren’t any surprises, and you feel comfortable and relaxed. We’ll then administer anaesthetic to numb the area and Penthrox gas sedation if you’d like. If you choose this option, please note that driving and making important decisions post-procedure will not be possible. Therefore, we recommend arranging for a friend or family member to accompany you.

Most people choose to extract all their wisdom teeth in one setting. However, if you’re experiencing discomfort or pain, an emergency extraction of a single tooth may be necessary. The extraction process can vary depending on the complexity of the case.

Typically, the upper wisdom teeth are removed first, followed by the lower. Once all four have been removed, we ensure the bleeding is under control and confirm that everything looks good before you leave. If your gum tissue has been cut or drilled, we smooth it over and suture it together to promote healing. You can expect to heal without noticeable traces of the procedure.

You’ll then be released to return home with a family member or loved one. You’ll come back for a visit with us in about two weeks to ensure everything has healed properly.

In the days after your visit, we recommend consuming mostly soft foods like smoothies or soup. Do your best not to chew foods with the rear of your mouth for the first week.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does wisdom tooth extraction cost in Brisbane?

Until we see you in the practice, estimating an exact cost is difficult as your mouth needs to be fully inspected beforehand. It is best to come in for a consultation first so we can assess and discuss your specific condition and quote the exact price accordingly. You can also call us and we can provide you with a price range and discuss health insurance coverage.

How do I know if I’ll need to have my third molars extracted?

The only way to find out if you need a wisdom teeth extraction is to have a consultation with us. You’ll come in for an appointment and let us examine you. We’ll look at the placement of your wisdom teeth with an OPG X-ray, which can be done bulk billed with no or little out-of-pocket cost if you have a Medicare card at a nearby X-ray clinic. From this information, we’ll discuss what we think is necessary with you and ensure you feel fully informed before making a decision.

Is the procedure painful?

No matter your procedure with us, we want you to be comfortable. We will administer a local anaesthetic to your mouth before we start with your wisdom teeth extraction. We’ll only begin the procedure once you agree that you are fully numbed and ready to proceed.

How long does a wisdom tooth extraction take?

A tooth removal can take anywhere from a few minutes to 1 hour. It depends on how many wisdom teeth need to be extracted and the case’s complexity. It is one of the most common same-day procedures done here at First Dental Studio.

Are there certain situations in which you don’t have to have wisdom teeth extracted?
Yes. If there is enough space in the mouth for the wisdom teeth to grow in, and they come through the gums as they should, they will not need to be removed.

Does insurance cover wisdom teeth removal?

Typically, wisdom teeth extractions are covered by insurance. However, as insurance plans can vary greatly, we always recommend checking your specific coverage before scheduling your procedure.
